Electric Lift Truck Systems and AC Traction Drives

This course provides foundational technical competencies required to service electric industrial lift trucks, focusing on chassis electrical architecture and three-phase alternating current (AC) traction drive systems. Technicians examine the interplay between main power disconnects, pre-charge circuits, DC link bus capacitors, and variable frequency motor controllers utilizing insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). Core principles cover vector drive theory, pulse-width modulation (PWM), and rotor position sensor feedback incorporating quadrature encoders and resolvers. Students explore regenerative braking physics, thermal management of power electronics, dynamic steering control interfaces, and Controller Area Network (CAN bus) signal integrity. Safety protocols, zero-energy state verification, and standardized electrical isolation techniques are integrated into every diagnostic sequence. Through rigorous laboratory exercises and systematic fault isolation procedures, participants learn to diagnose drive-line anomalies, evaluate traction motor performance, and interpret live controller data parameters to optimize material handling fleet reliability and operational safety.
